Air Jets and Nozzles

Reduce noise level and air cost on blowoff operations

What Are Air Jets And Nozzles?
A simple solution to excessive air consumption and noise level on compressed air “blowoff” operations. Using a small amount of compressed air as a power source, Air Jets and Nozzles produce outlet flows up to 25 times compressed air consumption.
Air savings, compared to open copper tubes or pipe nipples commonly used for blowoff can be as high as 80%. Less compressed air means less noise – typical noise level reduction is 10 dBA. All Air Jets and Nozzles meet OSHA maximum dead-ended pressure requirements.

An open 1/4" (6mm) copper tube, by contrast, ejects pure compressed air at up to 40 standard cubic feet per minute (1133 SLPM), the entire output of a 10 horsepower compressor. Annual energy cost can exceed $1,000 per year. Noise levels in excess of 100 dBA are commonly produced. When supply pressure exceeds 30 PSIG (2 BAR), an open jet violates OSHA static pressure requirements.

Air Nozzles also use the coanda effect to amplify compressed airflow 25 times or more. As illustrated below, compressed air is ejected through a thin ring nozzle. As this ring of air travels along the outer wall of the nozzle, surrounding air is entrained into the stream. This entrained airstream combines with the air ejected from the center hole to produce a high volume, high velocity blast of air at minimal consumption. The slotted end allows air to vent safely should the nozzle end be blocked.

Both Air Jets and Nozzles are easily retrofitted to existing blowoffs, and are available in adjustable or non-adjustable versions.
Oddly shaped parts often require a combination of Air Jets and Nozzles for blowoff.
How Air Jets And Nozzles Work
Air Jets utilize the coanda effect (wall attachment of a high velocity fluid) to produce air motion in their surroundings. As illustrated, a small amount of compressed air is throttled through an internal ring nozzle above sonic velocity. A vacuum is produced, pulling large volumes of surrounding, or “free” air, through the jet.
Air Jets produce the highest force to air consumption ratio, making them the most economical choice for “tough” applications such as part ejection or chip removal. Both the outlet and inlet can be ducted for remote positioning. If the end is blocked, flow simply reverses at well below OSHA static pressure requirements.

Air Nozzle Product Selection Guide
Pipe and Tubing Size Nozzles:

Air Nozzles are available in the most popular pipe and tubing size connections for easy retrofit to existing blowoffs. Simply select the nozzle with the same fitting size as your existing compressed air blowoff pipe or tube.

Adjustable Nozzle:

The air gap of the Model 1009 is adjustable, making it suitable for a wide variety of blowoff applications. It allows you to "tune in" the force and flow to the application requirements, thereby minimizing air consumption. A micrometer-like dial indicates gap setting.

Stainless Steel Nozzles:

The Model 1002SS Stainless Steel Pipe Size Nozzle and Model 1009SS Stainless Steel Adjustable Nozzle are ideal for high temperature, food processing and corrosive applications.

How To Calculate Air Savings
The charts below give air consumption at variious pressures for typical open jets and similar data for Air Jets and Nozzles. From this data, air cost savings obtainable through conversion to Air Jets or Nozzles can be easily calculated.
Example:
Existing blowoff is 1/8" open pipe at 100 PSIG supply. Air consumption, from the chart, is 85 SCFM .

Use a Model 1001 Air Nozzle, 1/8 NPTF also at 100 PSIG supply. Air consumption, from the chart, is 12 SCFM.

Compressed air saved = 85 - 12 = 73 SCFM.

For this example, the blowoff is continuous. If the duty Cycle was 20%, then air saved would be 73 x .2 =14.6 SCFM.

Most, large plants know their cost per 1000 standard cubic feet of compressed air. If you don’t know your actual cost per 1000 SCF, 25¢ is a reasonable average to use.

Dollars saved per hour = SCFM saved x cost/1000 SCF x 60 min = 73 x .25/1000 x 60 = $1.10/hour $1.10/hr is $44.00/week and $2,288.00/year savings.

Metric Example:
Existing blowoff is 1/8" (3.2mm) open pipe at 6.9 BAR supply. Air consumption, from the chart, is 2406 SLPM.

Use a Model 1001 Air Nozzle, 1/8 NPTF also at 6.9 BAR supply. Air consumption, from the chart, is 340 SLPM.

Compressed air saved = 2406 - 340 = 2066 SLPM.

For this example, the blowoff is continuous. If the duty cycle was 20%, then air saved would be 2066 x .2 = 413 SLPM.

Most large plants know their cost per 10,000 standard liters of compressed air. If you don’t know your actual cost per 10,000 SL, 8.9¢ is a reasonable average to use.

Dollars saved per hour = SLPM saved x cost/10,000 SL x 60 min = 2066 x .089/10,000 x 60 = $1.10/hour. $1.10/hr is $44.00/week and
$2,288.00/year savings.
